Fire on the roof: PROTECTOR RS4 for the German army

In December 2021, Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KONGSBERG) and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) signed a contract for the delivery of the PROTECTOR RS4, the world's most widely used remote weapon system, for the German program Joint Fire Support Team, heavy (JFSTsw).

The new contract with KMW includes the development and delivery of prototypes and reference systems for experiments and tests, and will be supplemented by a series production contract. The RS4 will be installed on a BOXER 8x8 with a new mission module.

The PROTECTOR RS4 has been designed and built for operation under extreme environmental conditions, and features capabilities that allow soldiers to operate from a protected position by using stabilized precision optics and a laser to observe, detect, and engage targets with increased accuracy and reduced collateral damage.

New product development: The PROTECTOR RS4 will be installed on a BOXER 8x8 with a new mission module, which includes the observation and surveillance systems PAAG (Panoramic Above Armour Gimbal) JFS from Thales, integrated into a generic NATO Vehicle Architecture (NGVA). NGVA is a NATO standard based on open standards for the development and integration of multiple electronic subsystems in military vehicles, and aims to create standards for the vehicle architecture of land systems to increase their sustainability and life cycle. The BOXER 8x8 is a highly mobile, state-of-the-art armored transport vehicle with a modular design that allows for a variety of mission-specific configurations, with a range of operational variants currently being developed.

KONGSBERG is already in the delivery phase of a PROETCTOR RS4 Counter UAS System for the German Army – also installed on the Boxer 8x8.
