Milrem Robotics and Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace conducted the first live firing of the PROTECTOR Remote Turret from the Robotic Combat Vehicle Type-X, a step towards developing the Nordic Robotic Wingman.
Milrem Robotics and Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace have successfully conducted the first live firing of the PROTECTOR Remote Turret from the Robotic Combat Vehicle (RCV) Type-X.
The first shot in the second week of June was fired using the PROTECTOR RT40 from KONGSBERG, equipped with a 30mm Bushmaster cannon and chainless ammunition transport system.
The live fire was a step towards the companies' joint project to develop the Nordic Robotic Wingman (NRW) - a robot-supported combat vehicle designed to meet the requirements of Nordic and Western European countries, as well as the USA. The NRW will support main battle tanks (MBTs) and infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) such as the Leopard 2 and CV90. It will be equipped with the latest and best PROTECTOR Remote Turrets (RT) from KONGSBERG, specifically selected to meet the needs of different end users.
The Type-X, on which the NRW is based, provides an infantry unit equipped with IFVs equivalent or superior firepower and tactical utility, allowing mechanized units to breach enemy defensive positions with minimal risk to their own troops. It can be equipped with a cannon of up to 50mm, anti-tank missiles, and an attached drone for constant situational awareness.
The Type-X from Milrem Robotics is equipped with intelligent features such as Follow-me, waypoint navigation, and obstacle detection, with artificial intelligence being part of the algorithms. With the Type-X, Milrem Robotics is also introducing a feature called Indirect Drive, enabling remote operations at higher speeds.
The Type-X will be on display at Eurosatory 2022 with the RT40 at the Milrem Robotics booth in Hall 6 K253.
