EUROSATORY 22: The Living and the Dead

06/21/2022By Redaktion

Sometimes it's the little things that make life worth living: like 9mm. At the same time, STEYR ARMS shows that size doesn't matter. In addition to an AUG in 300BLK – in service with the Cobra special unit in Austria – we see a new variant of a 9mm Steyr AUG. Barrel and bolt change, piston (different ejection window), and then add the new kit for the magazine well – compatible with Glock magazines. By the way, only for government customers.

In Paris, the Steyr G62 was also on display, with Steyr aiming to bring the G36 back from the dead. Some time ago, we reported on the plans for Steyr and Wilcox to upgrade the G36 – HERE is the SPARTANAT report on that. Now Steyr has presented its complete G36 upgrade project, the G62. In this process, the G36 housing is replaced with a metal one, which is supposed to eliminate some of the (alleged) problems.

There is also the possibility of a new mounting rail, a different barrel, and a magwell compatible with STANAG magazines. The components of this upgrade kit (housing, barrel, and magazine well) can be exchanged independently of each other without modifications to the existing G36. Also interesting is the integrated energy management by Wilcox.

A little tip from us Austrians to the industrial nation next door: Looks quite nice, and maybe this could be a usable and relatively inexpensive way to extend the service life of the G36 in the Bundeswehr, as it will still take some time for you to get it in line with the other two bidders for the new Bundeswehr assault rifle... HERE is more information about the G62 on Steyr Arms' website.
