The text discusses the opening of a new First World War section at the Heeresgeschichtlichen Museum Wien, showcasing historical artifacts and exhibits related to the war. The museum presentation is informative and highlights various aspects of the conflict, including weapons, uniforms, and societal impacts. A recommended visit for those interested in history.
Tomorrow, on June 28, the new First World War section will be ceremoniously opened at the Heeresgeschichtlichen Museum Wien. Today, we were there already and took a look at what has been created in the museum landscape, which has been closed for one and a half years for renovation. The centerpiece of the exhibition is the 38cm Skoda siege howitzer that Ferdinand Porsche made transportable in four elements. It stands out in the now two-story World War exhibit.
But let's start at the beginning: These cannons triggered the First World War. On June 28, 100 years ago, the shots were fired in Sarajevo. The HGM displays the actual weapons used by the assassins in 1914 ...
... and also displays the original car of the victim and his bloodstained uniform. Museum director Christian Ortner - HERE in the SPARTANAT interview - and Defense Minister Gerald Klug led a preview of the World War section.
The World War was a time of uniforms. Around 70 different figurines show what was worn. Less colorful, more earth tones. Here are Austro-Hungarian uniforms from the beginning of the war. Field gray becomes a fashionable color.
A Maxim machine gun on display. Automatic weapons and cannons have shaped industrial warfare.
Exhibits present the development of two typical Austrian handguns of the time.
One of the significant innovations was the emergence of aerial warfare. At the HGM, the prototype of an Albatros BII biplane hovers.
On the ground, it becomes tougher and more primitive: here is the uniform of a member of the storm troopers with hand grenade bags attached to the body. Clubs, brass knuckles, knives are at their peak, gas masks and additional armor are worn.
Even in art, the Heeresgeschichtliche Museum can present original pieces: Egger Lienz's famous painting shows advancing storm troopers, in front of it a genuine shot tank turret.
The war and its kitsch are also documented. Attempts to mobilize the population for the war effort, ...
...which also delves into the misery of war away from the front: war invalids, prosthetics, and suffering can also be seen in the new World War section of the HGM.
An overall diverse exhibition, showcasing the First World War across two floors. The Heeresgeschichtliche Museum has opted for a presentation without modernist effects, documenting the events in a calm and informative manner while also emphasizing thematic focal points. Highly recommended!
