FIRST WORLD WAR: The armored forehead

09/23/2020By Redaktion

Today we refer to it as SLAAP (left). The problem is that the head is raised above the cover and then becomes the target area. Headshots were a challenge in the First World War, hence the introduction of a new steel helmet (right) M16, which was supposed to provide more protection - here with the colorful paint from 1918.

But not enough, hence the constant attempt to improve the protective performance. The Museum of Military History in Vienna displays these specimens in its hall dedicated to the First World War.

This forehead protection is also on display there, simply strapped to the steel helmet with a strap.

In the museum, you can also find other items that are over 100 years old but appear extremely modern. This is a shield for trench warfare. Very similar shields are also used today by special forces or SWAT teams to protect against invading units.

Protective equipment was also a major topic in the First World War. Of course, they didn't have the materials for modern SAPI plates like those found in plate carriers today. The armored man here is an attempt to provide more protection while remaining mobile.
