A hydrogen vehicle for the US Army - Chevrolet Colorado ZH2

08/08/2017By Redaktion

More and more vehicles with electric motors are spreading. However, a major disadvantage is still the range of these vehicles. In addition, batteries are heavy and need to be charged, usually over a longer period of time. Not so with a hydrogen engine. This is hidden under the hood of the Chevrolet Colorado ZH2.The advantages that such a vehicle brings:

  • Extremely quiet during operation
  • Lower noise and heat signature (for comparison: a Humvee generates about 400 degrees Celsius, the ZH2 only 60 degrees Celsius)
  • High torque, even at low speeds thanks to the electric motor
  • Low consumption
  • Water as a byproduct

A few more data: Range of 322 kilometers, 177 HP, and the hydrogen tank is pressurized at nearly 700 bar. A lot, so what happens if it gets damaged? The engineers have thought about that and assure that even a .50 caliber bullet bounces off. This makes driving a bit more relaxing.

The hydrogen engine also produces so much energy that there is an additional generator in the trunk to connect military equipment to. This provides 25kW at 240 volts.

If the tests therefore proceed positively, this could mark the beginning of an era of military hydrogen vehicles. This wave could also spread to the civilian market. HERE you can find more information about the Colorado ZH2.
