And suddenly you're stuck: in winter, in your own car and have to spend the night there. What to have in the car during the cold season so it doesn't get too uncomfortable, or even life-threatening. Or simply to help others:

  • Shovel
  • Ice scraper and small brush
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • Transistor radio with batteries
  • Water bottles
  • Food (energy bars, gels, dried fruits, cookies, chocolate, etc.)
  • Matches and candles
  • Extra clothing (socks, hat, sweater, gloves, underwear)
  • Winter-appropriate footwear
  • Large first aid kit with pocket knife/multitool
  • Blankets or sleeping bag
  • Tow rope or chain
  • Jumper cables
  • Tools (pickaxe, saw, lug wrench)
  • Cell phone charger via cigarette lighter
  • Reflective vest, warning triangle, reflectors
  • Snow chains
  • Extra fuel (10 liters in a canister)
  • small backpack
  • Cat litter for traction on ice
