German Armed Forces:

Digital healthcare

09/26/2025By Redaktion

Digital practice management and medical documentation are essential for modern and effective healthcare. That is why the German Armed Forces has been moving toward electronic health records for some time now. This is the only way to ensure that important data is available in a timely manner to all authorized personnel in the German Armed Forces' healthcare system.

On August 27, 2025, the leaders of the Bundeswehr Healthcare Command and the Regional Medical Support Command met with project participants and stakeholders of the “IT Support for Military Medical Care” project in the hall of the Medical Service at the Falckenstein Barracks in Koblenz. On the occasion of the recent decision to award a contract for a market-leading product for practice management and medical documentation, Colonel Pharmacist Lars Ennuschat led the program, also to provide information about key project milestones and functionalities at the start of implementation.

From paper files to tablets

The digitization of the Bundeswehr's health records is one of the milestones of the digital transformation in the medical service, with the aim of working in a user-friendly, efficient manner that complies with regulatory requirements in the future. 75 percent of a soldier's health data is collected and recorded during free military medical or dental care. This is why digitization is particularly important in this area. For example, the previous paperwork involved in admitting or instructing soldiers will be eliminated. Instead, questionnaires pre-filled with patient data will only ask for what is actually necessary, directly on the tablet. Documentation will then be carried out purely digitally in the system, including a digital signature instead of a doctor's signature. All health information generated, whether outpatient, inpatient, or civilian, will ultimately be consolidated via a data exchange platform, the so-called “Health Information Management System,” and will together form the patient's electronic health record

Vaccination monitoring and appointment management

Following the project overview by the BWI, the concluding product presentation by Compu Group Medical Deutschland AG (CGM) promised many previously unavailable and eagerly awaited functionalities within the scope of this project. CGM presented the possibility of vaccination documentation and monitoring based on Bundeswehr-specific vaccination schedules. The ability to monitor and control the preparatory health measures for soldiers in the context of national and alliance defense is an essential contribution to fulfilling this very mission. Online appointment management, which was presented as a simple option accessible via mobile phone for making appointments across different facilities, also underscored the added value of the solution for doctors and patients alike.
