The Naval Technology and Research Institute for Ships and Naval Weapons, Maritime Technology and Research (WTD 71) conducted detonation tests last week with the decommissioned frigate "Karlsruhe" in the restricted area of Schönhagen in the Baltic Sea.
In total, detonations were carried out in two sessions with increasing explosive force; on Tuesday with 50 kilograms of explosives, and on the following Thursday with 175 kilograms.
The experiments proceeded according to plan overall, and the measures taken to protect the marine environment were effective. The optical monitoring, deterrent measures, and the double bubble curtain ensured that the impact on the marine environment could be minimized.
Now the evaluation phase begins, during which the multitude of generated data from the installed sensors and recording devices will be analyzed. The ship was also measured using special methods to detect any deformations in the hull structure. Extensive information is expected to be gathered on the effects of explosive devices and sea mines, which could be highly relevant for the construction of future navy ships.
Preparations for further tests next year are already underway. It is anticipated that detonations with the former "Karlsruhe" of a similar magnitude are planned for around mid-October 2025.
