The introduction of the new Nordic Combat Uniform (NCU) in the armed forces of the Nordic countries has begun. At the end of January 2025, the Hunter Battalion of the GSV Sør-Varanger in Norway received the first uniform systems consisting of multiple layers for different climate conditions, from extreme cold to desert conditions. The Sør-Varanger Garrison (GSV) belongs to the Finnmark Army. Among its tasks is the surveillance and securing of the 198-kilometer-long border with Russia.
Swedish and Danish soldiers are also expected to receive their first uniforms later this year. GORE-TEX Professional Fabrics, as a partner, equip various components of the uniform system with protective technologies.
The Nordic Combat Uniform (NCU) was created in a multi-year collaboration with specialized clothing partners such as Gore, Siamidis, Woolpower, and Aclima with the goal of developing a completely integrated uniform system specifically for the Nordic climate. The project is the largest of its kind and was realized in close cooperation with the armed forces in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland. The result is a modern, functional, and flexible uniform system that meets the military requirements for operations in challenging climate conditions.
The system includes all clothing components from the lowest to the outermost layer – from woolen underwear such as boxers, bras, and T-shirts to combat suits with two sets, consisting of a thermal jacket and pants as well as rain protection and winter camouflage clothing. It was specifically developed for Nordic climate zones but also includes suitable combinations for operations in jungle and desert environments.
Gore is an innovative company in the field of material science and provides high-performance functional textiles for professional applications, including in the military sector. The company was actively involved in the development and testing of the NCU, working closely with Nordic defense authorities and soldiers to ensure optimal performance under arctic, temperate, and humid conditions. Gore not only provided the material but also supported in prototype development, field testing, and design optimization to ensure that the uniform meets the high military standards for durability, breathability, and weather protection.
The following GORE-TEX product technologies are used in the Nordic Combat Uniform System:
"We are very proud to be part of the team that has developed this pioneering uniform system. Our top priority was to create a combat uniform that protects the soldiers while providing a high level of functionality, comfort, and sustainability with our product technologies. Seeing the finished clothing system being delivered to the soldiers to protect them during their important missions makes me very proud," says Åke Sahlgaard, Key Account Manager and NCU project leader at Gore. The Nordic Defense Cooperation (NORDEFCO) awarded a framework agreement for a uniform system, the Nordic Combat Uniform System (NCU), to Oskar Pedersen and Partner for the project, which has a total value of 425 million € and is unique both in scope and implementation.
In addition to Gore, the NCU project team includes the following partners: Oskar Pedersen AS (contract partner), Layers AS (project management), Costas Siamidis SA (system developer and manufacturer of all outer layers), as well as Aclima AS and Woolpower AB (both manufacturers and developers of woolen underwear).
