The Netherlands are set to rearm with Leopard 2A8 tanks, marking a significant shift after the dissolution of their tank battalions in 2011. This procurement signifies a return to independent tank operations for the Dutch military, reversing their previous reliance on allied nations for armored support.
The Netherlands are expected to become a Leopard 2A8 nation. Up to a battalion is expected to be procured, which is a significant turning point for the country: in 2011, the last two tank battalions of the Dutch were dissolved. The remaining tank force was placed under the 43rd Mech Brigade, which is partially staffed by two nations. So they no longer had their own tanks - until now.
