The new vehicle generation from Rheinmetall: HX3

05/06/2021By Redaktion

Rheinmetall has presented the latest generation of its globally proven HX trucks with the HX3. The future-proof military truck, which meets military and automotive megatrends thanks to new technologies, has been completely redesigned. Users can expect improved protection, increased mobility, higher driving comfort, and a digital interface architecture for even greater flexibility in missions and future performance enhancements. At the same time, the valued core strengths of the HX2 and the family concept are retained.

Like its predecessors, the vehicles of the new HX3 generation are designed as "Military off the Shelf" products, uncompromisingly tailored for military use under the toughest operating conditions - a unique feature in the industry. In addition to the robust chassis and powerful engines, an optional new active rear axle suspension significantly improves the vehicle's on-road and off-road capabilities.

The Truck as a System Carrier

More than ever before, the new HX3 generation embodies the concept of a platform for both logistical and tactical scenarios. The HX3 will be available in the versions 4x4, 6x6, 8x8, or 10x10 and will distinguish itself with an even greater variety of variants and systems. Its traditional role as a logistics vehicle can be enhanced by the availability of new systems such as the fully automatic Automated Load Handling System (ALHS) or the torsion-resistant Universal TorsionResistant Subframe (UTRS). In addition, the HX3 is more than ever suited as a system carrier for complex weapon or radar systems. These include truck-based artillery systems, which are expected to become significantly more important in the coming years. In combination with the newly developed Artillery Truck Interface (ATI), the HX 10x10 can in the future serve as a standard base for various artillery solutions or similar weapon systems.

With its completely redesigned cabin, the HX3 offers even greater user-friendliness and occupant protection. Thanks to various assistance systems, it provides more safety in everyday use, for soldiers as well as for civilian environments. A completely redesigned Electronic and Electrical (EE) architecture and assistance systems such as Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), and Lane Departure Warning (LDW) ensure the vehicle's future viability - especially with regard to autonomous driving. Thanks to standardized interfaces, future technologies such as Truck Platooning or other automated applications can be integrated.

Truck with Self-Protection

Optionally, the HX3 vehicles are available with an armored cabin, the protection of which can be modularly expanded. In addition, the new generation of vehicles features a new digital camouflage mode in addition to the conventional one. When necessary, all transmission and reception functions can be switched off to reduce the vehicle's digital signature. For active self-defense, weapon stations with heavy weaponry now have a place on the reinforced roof. In addition, additional options for attaching further active and passive protection systems are available, such as the Rapid Obscuring System (ROSY) or the Active Defence System (ADS) from Rheinmetall.

Through a consistently implemented common parts concept and model-crossing identical functions, fleet management and use are also simplified and made more efficient. The consistent implementation of part and function compatibility facilitates maintenance, supply, and training. The global service network guarantees fast availability over a long service life. This is further reinforced by high compatibility with the previous HX generation, of which more than 15,000 vehicles are already in use worldwide. The high worldwide prevalence of RMMV vehicles brings significant advantages in terms of interoperability and logistics, especially for multinational operations. Currently, Germany, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, and Austria are among the user base. Norway and Sweden have also placed significant truck orders with Rheinmetall.
