The U.S. Army's prototype of the HANWHA K9 mobile howitzer, designated the XM1776 Mobile Tactical Cannon (MTC), was unveiled on October 12 at AUSA 2026. HANWHA DEFENSE USA is set to deliver prototypes under a newly awarded contract and is establishing a facility in Opelika, Alabama, for integration and testing.
This is still the prototype of the U.S. Army’s HANWHA K9 mobile howitzer (K9MH); it is designated the XM1776 Mobile Tactical Cannon (MTC). The official naming ceremony, which included the unveiling of the XM1776 MTC system, took place on October 12 at AUSA 2026.
The U.S. subsidiary of South Korea’s HANWHA Group, HANWHA DEFENSE USA (HDUSA), recently received a contract to deliver prototypes of the K9MH wheeled howitzers for the Army’s MTC program. The original contract, valued at approximately $100 million, called for the expedited delivery of six MTC prototypes with an option for 12 more. The Army subsequently exercised the option for three additional systems, bringing the total order to nine systems.
HDUSA is currently establishing a Phase I facility in Opelika, Alabama, which will serve as the U.S. integration and test facility for the XM1776-MTC system and HANWHA’s K9 family of mobile howitzers. MORE INFO on the XM1776-MTC.
