The modernized tanks

Hardly recognizable from the outside, comprehensively renewed on the inside: The Austrian Armed Forces is modernizing a total of 170 tracked vehicles – 112 Ulan armored personnel carriers and 58 Leopard 2A4 battle tanks. New components, modernized fire control and weapon systems, as well as extensive technical adjustments significantly enhance the vehicles' performance. In the Leopard 2A4, some components used are comparable to or even identical with those of the newer A7 and A8 versions. A particular challenge is their integration into existing systems. The modernization is set to be completed by 2030. In total, the Austrian Armed Forces is investing approximately three-quarters of a billion euros in the future of the Austrian tank force.
