The leather uniform from Brazil

03/12/2020By Redaktion

Who thinks all uniforms are made of fabric or nylon is mistaken. A unit in Brazil relies on leather. Yes, leather. This unit is the "72nd Motorized Infantry Battalion" and they are based in the Caatinga. The Caatinga is located in the northeast of Brazil, is about twice the size of Germany, and half of the year it is dry, the other half it is very rainy and wet. But it is hot all year round.

From savannah to rainforest, everything is present. The vegetation is mostly thorny. To protect against that, a special uniform is needed and this one is partially made of leather.

In terms of colors, this leather uniform reminds us of a Russian GORKA. All important areas are reinforced with light brown leather, even the center of the bush hat.

Part of the uniform is the bush hat with an especially long brim at the back of the neck. This reliably protects against sunburn and moisture.

In the savannah area, the uniform blends in very well. The jungle with its specific vegetation requires special equipment. This is clearly seen in the machete that each soldier carries.

Also very unique about this uniform are the leather mittens. They are more like fingerless gloves with a large overlap. Not very aesthetic, but form follows function.
