When you hear it, it sounds quite logical, but we never really thought about it. It's about tactical symbols used on situation maps to represent the progress of own and enemy forces. Most people are familiar with the NATO standard symbols used in Europe. However, the Russians use completely different symbols and logic when using them. We found a very enlightening video here, unfortunately only available in English.
In short, the differences start with the colors used. Blue represents the enemy and red represents own forces, which is the opposite of what is usually known. From the Russian perspective, red as an ideological color still somehow makes sense.
