The combat swimmers of the Bundeswehr are preparing for a potential alliance case on the NATO eastern flank, but there are problems with the operational boats: the so-called RHIBs (Rigid-Hulled Inflatable Boats) were supposed to be decommissioned seven years ago – yet they are still in use. If one of the boats fails in operation, it can be life-threatening for the combat swimmers. Currently, the service life of the RHIBs expires at the end of 2026. And even if new boats were ordered immediately, the process – contract conclusion, delivery, operational testing, and ultimately training – could take years, despite new billions for the Bundeswehr. Germany's combat swimmers are deployed at the front lines. We have accompanied the company for almost a year.
The three-part series "The Combat Swimmers" gives you insights into the Navy's special forces that you won't find anywhere else. This is the second part of the documentary series.
