SAAB signed contracts with the British Ministry of Defence for 11 Giraffe 1X radars worth 264 million SEK. The radar provides air and ground surveillance for air defense, drone detection, and C-RAM warning. The UK chose Giraffe 1X for its speed and effectiveness. Visit SAAB's website for more information on Giraffe 1X.
SAAB has signed two contracts with the British Ministry of Defence for the delivery of eleven Giraffe 1X radars including support. The total value of the contract is around 264 million SEK, and deliveries have already begun.
The Giraffe 1X radars are primarily intended for operational use, with a single unit being procured by the Royal Navy to be mounted and tested on the XV Patrick Blackett. This ship is operated by NavyX to test, evaluate, and trial new technologies and concepts.
Giraffe 1X is a lightweight 3D surveillance radar with multiple applications for simultaneous air and ground surveillance, providing commanders with high-quality air defense target data, drone detection (C-UAS), and rocket, artillery, and mortar (C-RAM) detection and warning in a single solution. The United Kingdom has had a significant inventory of Saab radars, including ARTHUR (known as MAMBA in the UK) since 2004 and the largest fleet of land-based Giraffe AMB radars in operation since 2010.
This new capability for the United Kingdom was procured based on the fact that Giraffe 1X is the fastest and most effective solution available with a proven capability that enjoys a high level of confidence among experts in unmanned aerial defense systems (C-UAS). The systems include continuous software upgrades. All information about Giraffe 1X directly from SAAB.
