German joy: Leo A8 for everyone

05/27/2023By Redaktion

We expressly welcome the interest of our Czech partners in joining the German Ministry of Defense (BmVg) in the procurement of the Leopard 2 in configuration A8.

"Czech Republic's entry into a German contract is a major step towards a turning point," said Defense Minister Boris Pistorius. "Furthermore, Germany is living up to its role as a leading nation in the tank coalition. This way, the gaps can be filled again." The Czechs have announced at IDET 2023 that they want 70 Leopard 2A8 tanks.

The Ministry of Defense intends to purchase 18 Leopard 2 A8 battle tanks as replacements for the Leopard 2 A6 tanks transferred to Ukraine - SPARTANAT has reported. In this context, other partner nations are invited to join this procurement, according to the BmVg. The idea behind this is to achieve economies of scale with this step. Large quantities mean cost reduction. At the same time, this provides the industry with planning security to fully utilize and expand their production capacities.

Through the joint procurement of nearly identical products, significant synergies arise in the areas of procedures, training, and logistics. "With this approach, we strengthen our interoperability and credibility within the alliance," said the Germans, who also signed a framework contract for 132 A8 tanks. So, together with the Czech Republic, they are already at over 200 units of the most modern Leopard variant.
