Details emerge about the tragic shooting down of a CH-47 helicopter in Afghanistan, resulting in the loss of around 30 soldiers. The cargo belonged to Tier 1 SOF units, including operators from DEVGRU. Surprisingly, DEVGRU was used as an immediate reaction force in a lightly armored Army Chinook instead of an MH-47 from the 160th SOAR. US forces have since retaliated by killing the responsible Taliban commander and RPG shooter.
Days after the shooting down of a helicopter in Afghanistan, in which around 30 soldiers lost their lives, details begin to emerge. Kit Up! reports that the heli was a CH-47, belonging to a National Guard unit of the Army, but the cargo belonged to Tier 1 SOF units: A Combat Controller from the 24th Special Tactics Squadron, which normally operates with DEVGRU or DELTA, along with two PJs have lost their lives. The SEALs on board were a mix of ST6 (DEVGRU) and from a West Coast team. The DEVGRUs belonged to the Gold Squadron. One report mentions 22 dead DEVGRU Operators, which would correspond to about ten percent of DEVGRU. It is surprising that DEVGRU was used as an "immediate reaction force," that this unit was traveling in a lightly armored Army Chinook and not with a MH-47 from the 160th SOAR. DEVGRU was supposed to come to the aid of attacked Rangers when they were shot down by an RPG. US forces are said to have since killed the responsible Taliban commander and the RPG shooter.
