The company Velocity Systems from the USA has thrown its new flagship plate carrier, the SCARAB LT, on the market after years of development, ready to shake things up. At IWA2014, Travis J. Rolph, the owner and CEO of Mayflower R&C, the wing for special projects and SOF support from Velocity Systems, showed us a prototype that was very close to the final version.

But what makes the SCARAB so special? The SCARAB is a hard plate carrier in the classic sense, capable of holding only soft armor, at most a plate backer. At first glance, everything seems quite ordinary. But this "dung beetle" has something special and has been designed from the beginning with a focus on ergonomics, weight optimization, and modularity.

Ergonomics: A look at the shoulder straps of the SCARAB LT reveals that they are not sewn in place, but made of ULTRAcomp laminate and attached freely and movably at both ends to D-rings. This feature allows the plate carrier to adjust to the user's shoulder and neck area, providing high comfort and mobility. A feature that users with narrow shoulders or large neck muscles will surely appreciate. It's no wonder that SOF testers gave the system the nickname "The Awesome."

The shoulder straps are padded with softshell-stretch material, which allows cables and hoses to pass by the shoulders.

Weight management: The SCARAB is lightweight and achieves this through the combination of state-of-the-art materials. Laminates, softshell, 300D and 500D Cordura have been used, and the cummerbund is made of mesh material with MOLLE loops for ventilation.

Modularity: Plate carriers come in various variants, but few are suitable for every mission. This is supposed to be different with the SCARAB. It can be converted into a slick plate carrier by attaching a removable front flap. Those who don't want to lift the heavy equipment on the flap every time they open the carrier can switch to a "side entry" like a protective vest.

The SCARAB also comes with an attachment for the Velocity Systems SwiftClip System, which allows chest rigs and placards to be attached to the carrier.

On the back, there is a zipper on both sides for an included assault pack that can be easily attached. Of course, Velocity also has a surprise here, as the sides of the pack are made of stretch material and allow the pack to expand to daypack size if needed.

The SCARAB LT is available for private customers, for example at GEARMANIACS or SNIPER AS, authorities and large-scale buyers should contact LUPUS Training & Mentoring Resources.
