From May 9 to 11, 2023, the DEFEA trade fair will take place in Athens. Rheinmetall will present its Lynx KF41 armored fighting vehicle, a strong candidate for the modernization of the mechanized brigades of the Greek Armed Forces. The Lynx KF41 is Rheinmetall's answer to the requirements of future battlefields. It offers superior capabilities in terms of protection, firepower, mobility, and leadership. The Lynx KF41 is one of the most modern armored fighting vehicles on the market and has garnered high interest worldwide. Hungary, as the first NATO country, is currently introducing the Lynx, with the first deliveries taking place in 2022.
The Lynx KF41 concept includes a complete vehicle family consisting of the chassis module and flexible mission equipment in numerous variants. This allows each base vehicle to be configured as an armored fighting vehicle, air defense system, command vehicle, or ambulance. The configuration change is possible throughout the entire system's operational life. By standardizing the base vehicles, this system significantly reduces lifecycle costs and allows military users to quickly adapt force structures or develop new capabilities to respond to changing battlefield requirements. The Lynx KF41 excels in survivability, mobility, firepower, and has high growth potential in terms of overall weight and energy consumption.
The Lance 2 turret features powerful sensor systems to fully exploit the capabilities of its main weapon, the MK30-2/ABM cannon, the associated programmable 30mm next-generation ammunition, and the modern Spike LR2 anti-tank missile system. This enables it to engage both symmetrical and asymmetrical threats according to the situation.
The Lynx KF41 and Lance 2 are fully digitized and based on the generic NATO vehicle architecture (NGVA). This integrates the vehicle crew, dismounted forces, and the vehicle itself into digitized battle management.
Enhanced situational awareness enables rapid and highly automated target acquisition or handover. It also allows for the integration of multispectral reconnaissance systems including drones and loitering munitions for target acquisition and engagement beyond line of sight.
The Lynx KF41's modular, multi-layered protection concept combines passive and active elements. It provides its crew protection against the full spectrum of threats, including improvised explosive devices (IEDs), mines, direct and indirect fire, cluster munitions, and anti-tank guided missiles. With its high penetration capability and mobility, the Lynx KF41 will enable the armed forces to handle complex military operations across the intensity spectrum in various environments and against a variety of threats.
The Lynx KF41 boasts unmatched interior volume in its vehicle class. In addition to the three crew members, up to eight soldiers can disembark and conduct effective combat operations.
With its digitization and modern design, the Lynx KF41 can compete with today's adversaries and offers growth potential against the threats of tomorrow. The modular architecture allows for reserves in payload, electric drive, and processing capabilities to seamlessly integrate additional mission equipment into the vehicle or enable additional variants within a single vehicle family.
For the production of the Lynx KF41, Rheinmetall offers comprehensive industrial cooperation concepts with the local industry of the partner country. Hungary serves as an example. In September 2020, the Hungarian Ministry of Defense awarded Rheinmetall a contract for the delivery of combat vehicles and associated services. On October 15, 2022, Rheinmetall handed over the first of a total of 209 Lynx KF41 armored fighting vehicles to the Hungarian Armed Forces, which came from the production line established in Germany.
At the beginning of 2023, low-rate initial production (LRIP) began in Hungary. This pre-series production is an important milestone that includes the production of the medium-caliber Lance 2 turret and other Lynx KF41 variants. Serial production (Full-Rate Production/FRP) is scheduled to start in July 2023. The recruitment of qualified personnel and the influx of technical equipment for the Joint Defence Centre of Excellence, established by Rheinmetall and its joint venture partners in Zalaegerszeg, continues.
The Joint Defence Centre of Excellence in Zalaegerszeg not only contributes to maintaining and expanding Hungarian capabilities in the development and production of modern combat vehicles but also strengthens the domestic economy. The new Hungarian Rheinmetall colleagues are already working in Germany on the new Lynx KF41 vehicles, gaining valuable knowledge and skills that support knowledge transfer and technology transfer.
