The Keiler Next Generation can

08/19/2024By Redaktion

Rheinmetall's Keiler Next Generation (NG), the highly protected mine and barrier clearance system, demonstrated its performance during a live demonstration. Approximately 100 internationally invited guests from military forces, procurement authorities, and industry participated in the event on August 14, 2024 at the Bergen Training Area.

In the first segment, the Keiler NG demonstrated the rapid creation of mine lanes in the terrain. The Pearson mine plow was used for this purpose. The over four-meter-wide mine plow enables a mine clearance speed of up to 250 meters per minute. The mine plow can be quickly exchanged for a debris blade. Thus, the Keiler NG can also clear tank barriers, fill ditches, or push positions if needed.

The highlight was the second segment, where the rocket-propelled explosive cord system "Plofadder" was used. Plofadder from Rheinmetall Denel Munition can create a breach of 160 meters in length and nine meters in width in minefields and obstacles in minutes. By shooting overlapping, the two Plofadder systems of the Keiler NG allow for overcoming deep enemy mine barriers.

In addition to the mine plow and Plofadder explosive cord system, the Keiler NG is equipped with a magnetic field duplicator that detonates Second Generation mines far ahead of the plow. Furthermore, its integrated lane marking system marks the created lanes for follow-up forces even in limited visibility or at night.
Additionally, the Keiler NG, first publicly displayed at the Eurosatory 2024 trade fair in Paris, features an integrated crane that it uses to prepare for clearance and to load and unload Plofadder ammunition crates.

For self-protection, the Keiler NG is equipped with the quick smoke protection system ROSY and the remote-controlled weapon station Natter 12.7. The crew consists of two soldiers. The possibility of remote deployment is already included in the system concept, as well as the integration of a standoff active protection system and networking on the digitized battlefield.
The Keiler NG is based on the chassis of the pioneer tank Kodiak and therefore belongs to the Leopard 2 family. One the one hand, this contributes to the high agility of this 63-ton platform: maximum speed 65 km/h, climbing ability 90 centimeters, gradient ability 60 percent, trench crossing capability more than 2.50 meters. On the other hand, the association with the Leoben family has a positive effect on interoperability, logistics, and training. Existing pioneer tanks Kodiak can be converted into a Keiler NG-like configuration through equipment kits, and existing Kodiak qualifications expedite the readiness of the Keiler NG.
