Combat Vehicles

The fourth country with ASCOD

01/26/2021By Redaktion

General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) has received an order for armored ASCOD tracked vehicles from Elbit Systems. The vehicles will be equipped with the latest 105mm caliber turret and delivered to an Asia-Pacific customer over a period of three years.

With its modular design and open system architecture, the ASCOD can easily be configured for various roles, including as a light tank (LT) or medium Main Battle Tank (MMBT), and can be equipped with large caliber guns up to 120mm. Three more nations – Austria (as Ulan Infantry Fighting Vehicle), Spain, and the UK – have already selected the ASCOD as their preferred platform for armored tracked vehicles. The vehicles for the fourth customer will carry the brand name Sabrah – seen in the image above. "We are very pleased that the first customer outside of Europe has selected our ASCOD as a future light tank platform," said Thomas Kauffmann, Vice President International Business & Services at GDELS. "This demonstrates the clear trend in the armored vehicles segment towards medium weight (≤ MLC 50) and multi-role platforms, which provide modern armies with interoperability, flexibility, and advanced military mobility while significantly reducing logistical complexity and operating costs."

"With this contract, the number of ASCOD vehicles in operation or under contract reaches 1,000 units - an impressive demonstration of the system's innovation and its ability to adapt to all customer requirements. The modular design and open architecture of ASCOD are a great example of this advanced approach," said Kauffmann.

About the ASCOD

ASCOD is a modular vehicle design based on the successful Common Base Platform concept developed by GDELS. The ASCOD offers a large interior volume with very compact dimensions and combines superior tactical maneuverability with excellent mine protection and modular additional armor. GDELS delivers ASCODs to its customers with open architecture in a variety of variants and roles, all utilizing the same base platform, reducing complexity and costs while enabling custom solutions. For firepower, the ASCOD can accommodate a variety of turrets from different manufacturers ranging from 25mm to 120mm caliber, as well as Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGM). With its robust and scalable design, the permissible total weight of the ASCOD ranges from 30 to 45 tons, with various compact powerpack options of over 1,000 hp and with enough payload reserves for future technology introductions and developments. Despite its generous turret, it can accommodate up to 11 personnel and its digitized, open NATO architecture enables interoperability and the integration of subsystems from other manufacturers. The ASCOD is a proven and modern combat vehicle that meets current and future requirements. HERE you can find all information about the ASCOD family.
