Herrmann „Rosi" Rosenberg has something to say to you. The former paratrooper and former KSK operator publishes his accumulated knowledge as a tactical encyclopedia at SPARTANAT. "1,000 Soldier Tips are “Not just for Infantrymen” and is meant to help you become better prepared for deployment and everyday life. We wanted to know from Rosi what kind of book this is and how to use it.
SPARTANAT: Rosi, your new work “1,000 Soldier Tips” is a very extraordinary book. What’s the idea behind it?
Rosi: I don’t just train in Germany. I visit many different units. Often the operators say what a great idea it is, what a knot this is, how do you do this or that… I’ve been doing many things for decades and it’s completely normal for me. That’s where the idea for this book came from.
SPARTANAT: You bring more than 40 years of soldier experience into the field. When did you start gathering your tips?
Rosi: I didn’t gather the tips. Everything I’ve written down here is "my daily bread."
SPARTANAT: How should your readers use your book? Do you have a tip for them?
Rosi: I would first browse through the book and look at the pictures. For interesting pictures, I would read the text. Then I would work through the chapters that interest me the most and use a highlighter properly. And finally, I would read through the seemingly least interesting chapters. For a police officer, it’s certainly interesting to read how a Russian war veteran could act as a criminal!
SPARTANAT: Some see the whole thing as “service is service” or “service according to regulations.” When was your learning curve the steepest?
Rosi: I was raised as a young NCO to be creative in deployment and training. I actively continued to do that throughout my entire service time and afterwards. In the past, I always had my idea book on me, today I have notes on my mobile phone and a folder called “Ideas.” No matter where I am, it’s first noted down and later evaluated. Some things are nonsense, while others have proven themselves in training and deployment.
SPARTANAT: What is the most important tip you want to give to all soldiers?
Rosi: A healthy “mindset” is the basic requirement for service AND life in general.
