Poland is a country of tanks. Not because they have a fetish, but they are on the front line to the east, have a long, bad experience with their neighbor, and know they need 1000 battle tanks. The Polish Army was considering the Leopard. (In conversations with Polish tank crews, we also heard that they preferred this one.) But the request to the western neighbor for rapid armament did not work. Everything that came back was unrealistic for the Poles because it was too slow. So they stuck with the Leopards they have – above is the Leopard 2PL with its typical additional armor.
Poland and the Americans are very close. So they asked the USA for help and received Abrams tanks and a quick way to bridge the gap. They were in stock and quickly available.
And the Poles spoke with the Koreans from Hyundai-Rotem. They also promised fast delivery directly from South Korea, from where the first K2 originated. But this cooperation is ongoing, as the Polishized K2PL is set to become the standard tank of the Polish Army. And it will be produced in Poland. This gives the partners a big goal: tank production in Poland. This brings jobs to the Poles and gives the Koreans access to the European tank market, where there is much to sell. We will hear more about the K2 and its variants.
