If the dpa knows what it's doing, the winner of the G36 successor tender is determined. Heckler & Koch seems to have lost, the winner is Haenel Defence from Suhl, Thuringia. The submitted weapon by Haenel is called MK556 and it will likely be the next assault rifle for the German Bundeswehr.

The assault rifle MK 556 is a full-automatic weapon designed for military use. C.G. Haenel in Suhl developed the Sturmgewehr MK 44 in the 1940s - a rifle that not only established this class of weapons, but also significantly influenced all subsequent designs of this type.

The disclaimer regarding the Bundeswehr's weapon choice is that despite the dpa report, confirmation from the German Ministry of Defense is still pending. And even if it should be officially confirmed, there may still be a review process. It's no wonder that the coveted contract volume for this procurement is around 250 million euros.
