The Minimi in 6.5 Creedmoor

05/22/2019By Redaktion

FN Herstal presents a new prototype, the MK 48 Mod 2. The special feature of this Minimi variant is the choice of caliber, namely 6.5 mm Creedmoor. In addition to this innovation, some details such as the bipod and handguard have also been revised. With 6.5 mm Creedmoor, the Army aims to have a heavier caliber with more penetration power.

The FN MK 48 Mod 0, developed from the 7.62x51mm FN MINIMI® by FN Herstal, was implemented as part of the USSOCOM program in 2003. The goal was to have a compact and easy-to-use machine gun in a heavier caliber. The improvements made to the MK 48 were also incorporated into the M249 series and are in use with the USSOCOM as the MK 46 5.56x45mm machine gun. Furthermore, FN also holds current USSOCOM contracts for the MK 17 8SCAR H) in 7.62x51 mm and the precision rifle MK 20 SSR, a variant of the SCAR H.
