Hungary, the first NATO and EU member state, procures the newly developed Lynx armored fighting vehicle from Rheinmetall. With this significant success, the Düsseldorf-based technology group achieves a breakthrough with its new innovative combat vehicle for global markets.

Rheinmetall has now been tasked by the Hungarian Ministry of Defense to deliver tracked vehicles and associated services worth over 2 billion euros. The contractual agreement, signed in Budapest, includes 218 Lynx KF41 armored fighting vehicles and nine support vehicles of the Bergepanzer 3 Büffel type. In addition, the contract includes other services such as simulators, training, and initial spare parts and maintenance services from Rheinmetall. The Lynx armored fighting vehicles will be equipped with the manned 30mm Lance turret, also developed by Rheinmetall.

For Rheinmetall, this contract offers the prospect of further orders in the future. Given the expected long service life of the Lynx, spare parts will be needed and maintenance measures will be required to keep the vehicles operational.

46 Lynx from Germany, 172 from Hungary

In an initial production phase, Hungary will receive 46 Lynx armored fighting vehicles and nine Bergepanzer 3 Büffel from German manufacture, with deliveries expected to be completed by early 2023. In a second phase, Hungary will locally produce 172 more Lynx vehicles to further equip the country's armed forces.

Already in mid-August 2020, an agreement was reached between the Hungarian government and Rheinmetall to establish a joint venture, financed by a Hungarian partner company, responsible for setting up Lynx production in the customer country.

Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall AG: "It is a significant success for us to have achieved market breakthrough with Lynx. The success is all the more valuable as we have secured an important EU and NATO partner like Hungary as a customer for this innovative vehicle. With this groundbreaking procurement decision, Hungary and its military and political leaders demonstrate leadership. The country is not only technologically at the forefront of European military technology, but the Hungarian government is also following through with substantial effort its course to be a reliable and militarily capable partner to NATO forces."

Continuing on the major success for Rheinmetall, the CEO states: "We are very grateful to the Hungarian leadership for the trust expressed in this procurement. We are proud to be able, in cooperation with Hungarian industry, to make a significant contribution to the sustainable expansion of the country's defense capabilities. We look forward to working with our Hungarian partners and friends and will do everything in our power to ensure long-term success."

The joint venture company being established in Hungary for Lynx production will be majority-owned by Rheinmetall. The Hungarian partner will contribute a newly built production facility as a significant investment to the joint venture. The resulting center of excellence for the development, production, and maintenance of armored vehicles will become an important nucleus of Hungary's defense industry. Through the joint venture with the local production partner in Hungary, a substantial portion of the value creation from the procurement of the combat vehicles will take place in the customer country.

For Hungary, this procurement is a significant step in its efforts to introduce a new generation of military equipment and meet the latest NATO standards for key systems. Currently, the Lynx is also competing in neighboring Czech Republic and with Australian armed forces for similar acquisitions.

Lynx – modular, flexible, future-proof

It took less than five years from the idea of a new armored fighting vehicle through strategy development, concept and development, to the first successful sale: a remarkable achievement for a company-funded combat vehicle in a challenging market environment with typically long procurement cycles.

The Lynx concept includes a complete vehicle family, consisting of the drive module and flexible mission equipment in numerous variants. This allows each base vehicle to be configured as an armored fighting vehicle, armored personnel carrier, command vehicle, or ambulance. The configuration change can be done in a few hours. By maintaining uniformity in the base vehicles, this system significantly reduces lifecycle costs and allows military users to quickly adjust force structures or develop new capabilities. Lynx stands out for its high survivability, mobility, combat power, and growth potential, including total weight.

With its large interior volume, the Lynx is unmatched in its vehicle class and ensures that the three crew members and up to nine dismount troops can carry out effective combat operations.

The Lynx provides its crew with protection against the entire spectrum of threats, including explosions, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), direct and indirect fire, cluster munitions, and anti-tank missiles. With its high penetrative power and the mobility of a battle tank, Lynx will enable the armed forces to handle complex military operations across the full intensity spectrum in different environments and against a variety of threats.
