As part of the German Army's drone defense program "qualified air defense," sensor specialist HENSOLDT delivers the latest version of its radar " Spexer 2000 3D " to the system integrator Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace. Spexer will be part of the C-UAS system (Counter-Unmanned Aerial System) based on the remote-controlled weapon station "Protector" from Kongsberg, both mounted on an armored GTK "Boxer" vehicle. Initially, 10 systems are under contract. Radar deliveries will start at the end of this year to meet the requirements of the NATO VJTF (= Very High Readiness Joint Task Force) 2023.
The contract was awarded after a test firing at the Baumholder training area. The third generation of the HENSOLDT radar " Spexer 2000 3D " demonstrated excellent classification performance of small targets in very challenging scenarios. Due to the small radar cross-section, high agility, and high optical reconnaissance capability of these micro drones, they pose a special threat to mobile ground forces.
The new generation of Spexer radar also closes the gap in the reconnaissance capability of small targets in close proximity within ground-based air defense. In addition to drones, the classic air and ground target catalog – such as helicopters, combat aircraft, armored vehicles, etc. – can also be detected and classified. These capabilities set new standards in radar-based self-protection.
Over 150 systems of previous generations of the Spexer radar have already been delivered to customers and are operational worldwide.
