CORVUS DEFENSIO: With the Steyr AUG into the 21st century

The Steyr AUG assault rifle is a great weapon, but one cannot escape the impression that its development has more or less remained stagnant since its introduction as the StG77 in Austria with the Bundesheer. While there are international licensed productions and replicas, not much has changed with the American MSAR AUG, except for the A3 which adds a top rail. Accessories for the AUG are ultimately rare (CQC, Ratworx, Suarez). Thales has revised the Australian licensed F88 rifle and last year released it as the completely new F90. And what about Steyr itself? Silence reigns in the forest...

From Vienna comes a new company that, with its accessories tailored to the classic Steyr AUG, catapults this weapon into the 21st century. CORVUS DEFENSIO tackles the problem areas of the AUG with intelligent solutions born out of practical experience.

aug-deflectorOne of the biggest problems of the AUG is the shell ejection, which in the bullpup design is far back and leads to significant facial pain when changing weapons from right-hand shooting to left, as the shells are ejected into the face. The CorDef shell deflector redirects the empty ejected shells to the side or forward, creating ideal conditions for a seamless grip on each AUG from the shoulder opposite the ejection window. The shell deflector is simply inserted into the shell ejection window of the AUG stock and clamped by tightening the two screws. It also protects the plastic stock from damage.

aug-receiver-railCORVUS DEFENSIO addresses the entire rifle: The CorDef Picatinny 35 Slots chassis rail provides a solid and continuous mounting solution for attaching optical and optronic targeting devices, open sights, laser markers, and other accessories. The rear end of the rail extends almost to the shell ejection window, allowing optics with very short eye relief to be used effectively. The rail features a milled mounting groove for direct attachment of 3x and 4x Trijicon ACOG scopes. This results in a lower overall mounting height when using co-witnessed red dot sights. Simultaneously, the sling mounting is different: The chassis rail has an integrated attachment for slings (QD sling swivels, carabiner hooks, or paracord). And there is plenty of space up front: Keymod mounting options in the front rail area can be used for lateral mounting of various accessories and Picatinny rails.

aug-forward-acessory-railKeymod is also the standard CORVUS DEFENSIO adheres to for the handguard rail that replaces the AUG's folding handle. The CorDef Keymod handguard rail increases accessory mounting possibilities under the barrel of the Steyr AUG. The rail is simply mounted in place of the original handle and allows the mounting of a variety of accessories directly to the Keymod attachment points (e.g., handguards, light mounts, bipods, sling mounts, etc.) without additional Keymod Picatinny rails. This direct attachment to the Keymod system also significantly reduces weight. If users prefer to mount accessories using the more common Picatinny system, they can attach the CorDef 15-Slot or CorDef 4-Slot Keymod Picatinny rails.

aug-enhanced-mag-releaseImprovements to the AUG continue on the underside of the weapon: CORVUS DEFENSIO's enlarged magazine release helps make magazine changes faster and more reliable. With the original, the release only happens once the magazine is already flush with the housing. Corvus Defensio's design prevents problems with the release and ensures a quicker and more reliable magazine change.

With CORVUS DEFENSIO, even the sling mounting is changing: The QD sling mount bolt with anti-rotation solves two problems that are often noticed by professional AUG users. The original mounting bolt, which can constantly rotate around its own axis, causes the sling to twist when the rifle is repeatedly slung. The anti-rotation of the mounting bolt prevents this completely. Furthermore, the QD function of the mounting bolt allows quick-release slings to be used. Together with the two QD attachment points on the rail, the sling no longer comes into contact with the front half of the rifle, where contact between the sling and gas pressure device or charging handle could lead to problems.

All this is all well and good in the true sense of the word, but the revolution of the Steyr AUG is carried out by CORVUS DEFENSIO through a conversion kit that brings the trigger mechanism up to the standard of an AR15. The original trigger group from Ratworx and 2020 Precision, which was not available in this country, has been completely overhauled (including the transmission and an integrated trigger stop). The nearly 5 kg trigger weight plastic parts from Steyr are replaced with the kit featuring 2.6 kg ALG parts, Two-Stage Trigger behavior, clear reset, and ultimately a different shooting experience that is more precise and faster. With optional internals from Geissele, the shooter achieves a 1.7 kg trigger weight. Only trigger components from Geissele and ALG are used.

CONCLUSION: Each part from CORVUS DEFENSIO makes the Steyr AUG a better rifle; together, they revolutionize the weapon in terms of user-friendliness and capabilities. The first parts described here have been available since October 26th, with more in development.
