Cool in war - Airsoft in Iraq

02/10/2017By Redaktion

An assault rifle can be cool. Even cooler, however, is when you have a 40mm underbarrel grenade launcher attached. That looks powerful, every airsoft player knows that. And every soldier who has to lug around the real thing and now and then can close the firing gap between assault rifle and real grenade launcher with a bang up to 200 meters knows it too.

Now, the people in Iraq also know that "40 Mike Mike" is pretty cool. That's why you see an AKM with the Chinese standard rail for AKs (30 dollars and by the way not bad) - and with a supposed grenade launcher. Cool combo, even if the launcher is a Madbull Airsoft Launcher (Link).

Here the same game with an M4A1 from Iraq. We are not assuming that they are playing airsoft in Kurdistan and surroundings. It simply has too little FPS for the game that is played there. The secret is quite different and it is hidden in the word "cool". Just like in the airsoft scene, Americans and their modern equipment are role models for many in the rest of the world. This is no different in Iraq, where Iraqi troops, especially their special forces - like the "Golden Division" - have an easier time because they often receive the previous generation of US equipment (clearly recognizable by NVG mounts and PEQ boxes) to fight the bad guys.

Now, we assume that the Madbull Airsoft Launcher was not included in the real American stuff. But it looks so real and you can simply screw it onto the rail. The secret: it's cool. You look important with it, it doesn't matter that you're carrying around extra weight. Yes, men are like that. Size matters...

The secret behind this is also that Iraq has very strict gun import laws. However, airsoft products are not included. Last year, when we had the opportunity to visit the front lines against the Islamic State, we could roam around the Kurdish capital Erbil beforehand and visit the local equipment stores. And behold: they were better airsoft stores. Or worse, because everything from cheap uniforms from China to plastic helmets in Ops-Core and MICH style to airsoft optics was there. And it was clear that these optics consistently end up on real weapons, we have seen it often enough. And airsoft Ops-Cores were seen on the heads of Kurds - because it's "cool" to look like an American. And that's also the story of the Airsoft Madbull Grenade Launcher. Do it with style... appearance matters not only on the airsoft field.
