Challenger 2: Tank betrayed for game

07/19/2021By Redaktion

A British tank commander has leaked secret data about the Challenger 2 battle tank to the game developers of WAR THUNDER. The tank commander was very upset about how the tank combat video game by Gaijin had portrayed the performance of his nation's tank. To show the developers how they had inaccurately modeled the in-game design of the Challenger 2 tank, the soldier obtained a user manual about his British battle tank and shared the documents with the developers on a discussion page of WAR THUNDER.

However, this user manual, known as AESP (Army Equipment Support Publication), also contained classified material about the Challenger 2, which the tank commander then shared with the developers. Shortly after the game developers dealt with the classified data, officials from the Ministry of Defence confirmed upon inquiry that the documents provided by the tank commander about the Challenger 2 were indeed classified and were in no way intended for the public.

Swift actions were taken: the posted screenshots of the AESP were deleted from the website, the tank commander faced severe penalties, including a prison sentence of up to 14 years for violating the Official Secrets Act, which is even warned against in the AESP. Furthermore: a ruined career. And all of this for a game... Rheinmetall will pimp the Challenger 2 to Challenger 3: HERE is the story on SPARTANAT.
