The new baseball season is just around the corner and the San Diego Padres, a Major League Baseball (MLB) team, have made it a tradition to play their home games in camouflage uniforms. They do this to express their gratitude and respect for those who have chosen to serve their country in uniform. The Padres in particular have adopted this practice because San Diego and its surrounding areas are home to several major military bases, including the largest naval base in the world. (Norfolk/Virginia and Vladivostok/Russia - both formerly larger - were downsized due to budget restrictions.) As a result, a large number of Padres fans are active or former military personnel.
This year, the Padres have chosen the USMC, which is why the pattern closely resembles the Desert MARPART. In previous years, games have been played in Woodland and DCU patterns. However, some argue that the digital pattern is so effective at camouflaging that it could provide an advantage over the opponent. This view is not widely supported, so the MARPART jersey will soon be in use.
Of course, this action is not entirely selfless, as these jerseys sell quite well. Not only do "true fans" purchase the current season's outfit, but also those who buy it precisely because of the camo-coolness factor, such as Missy Elliot (seen here in the Woodland Padres Jersey).
