The Bundeswehr is receiving new lightweight torpedoes "Mk54" for the long-range reconnaissance aircraft P-8A Poseidon. The procurement is taking place at the government level between the German Federal Government and the US Administration through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) process.

The purchase of the torpedoes is financed from the special fund and is being procured as part of the approved introduction of the new maritime reconnaissance aircraft P-8A Poseidon, whose main task is the combat of submarines in shallow waters. Additionally, the torpedoes are already tailored to the aircraft and fully integrated.

Powered by a combustion engine, the approximately 2.70 m long and 276 kg heavy torpedoes track and classify potential targets underwater. In case of engagement, the explosive-filled warhead detonates upon impact, thereby destroying the target.
