The Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Use of the Bundeswehr (BAAINBw) has commissioned the Project System & Management GmbH (PSM), a joint venture of Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) and Rheinmetall, to retrofit an additional 143 infantry fighting vehicles PUMA. These are the activation of two options, which are part of the contract for the retrofitting of the series infantry fighting vehicles PUMA to the new design standard S1. This contract was signed in June 2021.
The contract volume is over 770 million euros. By 2029, the 143 PUMA systems are to be modernized in the core capabilities of firepower and leadership capability. With the activation of the options, it is now ensured that all series infantry fighting vehicles PUMA are brought to the uniform design standard S1. The retrofitting includes, among other things, the integration of high-resolution day and night vision camera systems, the Multi-role Light Anti-tank Missile System (MELLS), and the integration of a digital radio equipment.
