Combat Vehicles

German: Bundeswehr-LKWs im Nebel English: Bundeswehr trucks in the fog

10/01/2021By Redaktion

The Bundeswehr's interchangeable container trucks are equipped with the Rapid Obscuring System ROSY from Rheinmetall. In a first step, a total of 540 systems will be delivered by Rheinmetall Weapon Munition to Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles, the manufacturer of the vehicles. A ROSY system consists of two launchers with two magazines, quick attachment, and the control unit. With this largest ROSY delivery to date, the Rapid Obscuring System can further establish itself with NATO armed forces.

The vehicle protection system ROSY (Rapid Obscuring System) provides protection for military and civilian vehicles in unexpected attacks such as reconnaissance or convoy missions, as well as in offensive or defensive operations. Unlike conventional smoke protection systems, the ROSY system can create dynamic smoke screens in addition to spontaneous, large-area, and multi-spectral line-of-sight interruptions. This allows moving objects to be protected for a long time.

The ROSY system is used on both protected and unprotected cabins, increasing the safety of the crews. In particular, the protected interchangeable container systems significantly increase the survival and resilience as well as the tactical flexibility of the supply troops.

Unlike the Unprotected Transport Vehicles (UTF) also supplied by Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles (RMMV), they also operate heavily in the front areas of the operational areas, for example in ammunition supply for combat and combat support troops. However, even in rear areas, the supply troops must always be prepared for attacks, for example by scattered enemy soldiers or special forces, which is why the ROSY rapid smoke system also makes a valuable contribution to the protection of deployed soldiers here.

By early November 2021, Rheinmetall will deliver 150 ROSY equipment sets. The remaining 390 equipment sets are expected to follow by the end of October 2022. There is potential for further deliveries: In June 2020, the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology, and Use of the Bundeswehr (BAAINBw) signed a framework contract with RMMV for the delivery of up to 4,000 interchangeable container trucks, with a large portion of the vehicles featuring armored cabins. In an initial call-off, the production of 540 vehicles was commissioned, including 230 with protected cabins. Delivery began in early 2021. The goal is to ensure that the troops have a sufficient number of vehicles when Germany takes over the leadership of the NATO spearhead VJTF in 2023.
