The German Armed Forces have decided, as widely suspected, to choose Heckler & Koch and the HK416 A8 as the new German assault rifle. In the procurement process, the focus was recently on plastic magazines (allegedly involving Magpul) and drainage openings (which cannot be protected by patents, arguing that they were not invented in Germany). Observers note that the Haenel package was 30 million Euros cheaper, but the political decision is not included in the price.

Haenel has issued this initial statement: "We are very disappointed in the decision by BAAINBw to exclude C.G. Haenel from the procurement process and award the contract to H&K. Throughout the entire procurement process, C.G. Haenel has acted professionally and has endeavored to transparently address all questions related to the offer based on facts and away from the media spotlight. Recently, we have submitted comprehensive responses to the allegations made against our company, supported by an expert opinion prepared by one of the leading law firms in Germany. Our responses and the expert opinion leave no doubt that all allegations against Haenel, including the accusation of patent infringement, are unfounded and that the exclusion of our company from the procurement process on the basis of these allegations is unlawful. We are reviewing BAAINBw's decision and will take all necessary legal steps to protect our interests.
