The German Army is receiving a new unmanned reconnaissance system with medium range. Today, the President of the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Use of the German Armed Forces (BAAINBw) signed a corresponding amendment contract with Rheinmetall Technical Publications GmbH for the procurement of a total of 13 HUSAR reconnaissance systems.
Due to its excellent performance in its weight class, the system is unique. HUSAR is highly mobile and can be used independently of infrastructure. It provides the troops with highly accurate reconnaissance data in almost real-time with a flight duration of twelve hours, contributing to a comprehensive situational awareness. The reconnaissance drones have a range of up to 150 km and can be deployed in day and night under almost all climatic conditions. With the intended type approval from the German Airworthiness Authority, safe operation over densely populated areas is also ensured.
Starting from 2025, the German Armed Forces will receive a total of twelve production systems and one training system. A system consists of five reconnaissance drones with a maximum takeoff weight of 110 kg each, two ground control stations, two launch vehicles, two antenna masts, workshop equipment, and three transport platforms.
HUSAR stands for "Highly efficient unmanned system for imaging reconnaissance in medium range". Marketed by the industry under the name "LUNA NG/B", it is intended to gradually replace the outdated "Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Target Acquisition" KZO.
The amendment contract signed today ensures the continuation of the project with the new contractor Rheinmetall after the bankruptcy of the original system manufacturer. The contract specifies the measures resulting from Rheinmetall taking over the procurement contract, which was originally signed in 2022. ALL INFORMATION on HUSAR/LUNA NG/B directly from RHEINMETALL.
