BUNDESWEHR: The good water

The Bundeswehr responded swiftly to recent incidents involving attempted infiltration and suspected manipulations of drinking water supply systems at military facilities. Despite initial concerns, laboratory tests confirmed the water was safe for use, with measures being taken to strengthen security protocols. This highlights the importance of ongoing vigilance and adaptability in maintaining military security.

In recent days, there have been special incidents in properties of the Bundeswehr - SPARTANAT has reported. These incidents involved attempts to infiltrate the military security area and suspected manipulations of drinking water supply systems. In all cases, the Bundeswehr reacted quickly and appropriately. Controls were increased at the Cologne-Wahn Air Force Barracks, the NATO Airbase Geilenkirchen, and the Bleiberg Barracks in Mechernich.

Early in the morning of August 14, a technical alarm first went off at a water supply system in the barracks in Cologne-Wahn. The personnel called in noticed a person near the pump house who quickly moved away from the fence. Damage was also found at the fence. In the immediate vicinity of the discovery site is the barracks' own drinking water supply system, and manipulation of this system could not be ruled out. As a precaution, the water treatment plant of the barracks was deactivated and samples were taken. Rapid tests confirmed values in the water that deviated from the norm, but did not allow conclusions about the quality and quantity of the contaminants.

Within the framework of the German Drinking Water Ordinance

The final results of the required inspections are now available. No exceedances of the limits set by the German Drinking Water Ordinance were found. The water can be used again. The incidents had no impact on civilian water supply.

The Minister of Defense, Boris Pistorius, commented on the matter on August 14, 2024: "We reacted quickly, blocked access points, intensified controls, involved law enforcement authorities, and initiated laboratory tests. These incidents show that we must continue to remain vigilant. Of course, after these incidents, we are reviewing and strengthening our security measures and adjusting them as needed. This includes the surveillance of fences and technical safeguards."
