The Bundeswehr orders another 367 military trucks

06/29/2023By Redaktion

Rheinmetall has been commissioned by the Bundeswehr to deliver 367 protected and unprotected logistics vehicles. This is another call-off from the framework contract for interchangeable container systems (WLS) concluded in June 2020. In addition to the vehicles, 1,830 interchangeable container platforms were ordered as exchangeable load carriers. The order value of the call-off is over 285 million euros gross. Delivery is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2023.

In June 2020, the BAAINBw concluded a framework agreement with Rheinmetall for the delivery of up to 4,000 WLS by 2027, of which over 600 units have already been delivered. The new WLS trucks build on the successful project of Unprotected Transport Vehicles (UTF) and expand the Bundeswehr's vehicle fleet of the military HX family. The core equipment of the WLS is the hook loading device developed by Hiab. With this, the interchangeable container platforms introduced into the Bundeswehr can be picked up and dropped off in virtually any terrain without further handling equipment. Alternatively, the vehicles can also transport a swap body or a container via the standardized 20-foot ISO interfaces.

A large part of the Bundeswehr's WLS trucks will have a protected variant with an armored cabin, significantly increasing the survival and endurance capability as well as the tactical flexibility of the logistical units and formations. The WLS vehicles are used in particular for supplying combat units with consumable items such as ammunition, fuel, or water.

Both the WLS and the UTF are based on Rheinmetall's robust HX vehicle family. Designed from the outset for military use, they are characterized by excellent mobility even in rough terrain. The widespread use of the HX vehicle family worldwide brings great advantages in terms of interoperability and logistics, especially for multinational operations. Currently, countries such as Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Austria, Hungary, and Denmark are among the users.
