30,000 speech sets with hearing protection function

The Bundeswehr has commissioned Rheinmetall for the delivery of a second batch of the communication headset system with hearing protection function - known as SMG. The troops are to receive an additional 30,000 sets, which are divided into 8,000 leadership-SMG and 22,000 soldier-SMG. The delivery is scheduled to begin in mid-2025 and be completed by the end of 2025. The contract value is around 55 million EUR net. A first call for the delivery of 30,000 sets was already triggered in April 2024. Both delivery batches are funded from special assets.

In April 2024, Rheinmetall received a framework contract from the Bundeswehr for the delivery of up to 191,000 sets of the "communication headset system with hearing protection function." The framework contract has a duration of seven years and a potential order volume of up to 400 million EUR net. The communication headset system with hearing protection function is a key project for tactical communication, with cross-functional significance for the entire troop.

The SMG includes a modern active earmuff hearing protection, which reduces harmful impulse noise and can amplify quiet sounds. Furthermore, the system is equipped with a microphone and can be connected to various radio devices, allowing for radio communication. In addition to the combined hearing and speaking headset, various push-to-talk (PTT) buttons and various cable sets for connecting to various radio devices and intercom systems are included in the scope of delivery. Rheinmetall has involved two leading manufacturers as subcontractors for the project: 3M Deutschland GmbH with the ComTac VIII hearing and speaking headset, and CeoTronics AG with CT-Multi PTT 1C and 3C. The SMG is compatible with the new combat helmet also supplied by Rheinmetall, as well as with other helmet types used by the Bundeswehr.
