Bundeswehr: 18 new Leopard 2 tanks

05/25/2023By Redaktion

The German Army is receiving new Leopard tanks in the most modern version 2 A8. In March, Germany had handed over a total of 18 Leopard 2 A6 tanks to Ukraine - the same number will now be procured anew.

A corresponding contract was signed today at the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Use of the Bundeswehr (BAAINBw) with Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW). Prior to this, the Budget Committee of the German Bundestag approved the project with a total volume of around 525 million euros on May 24, 2023, less than three months after the start of the procurement process and in record time.

"Not only will the material handed over to Ukraine be replaced in the shortest possible time, but the tanks will also be of the type 2 A8 - the latest version of the proven combat tank," emphasized the responsible project manager at BAAINBw. The version represents a further development based on the Leopard 2 A7V, which includes, among other things, the active protection system TROPHY. The troops will thus receive a highly modern and powerful system that combines protection, effectiveness, and mobility in an excellent manner.

The contract also includes a package for logistical support and the option to deliver up to an additional 104 combat tanks including spare parts and maintenance for five years.

The first combat tanks will be delivered as early as 2025. By the end of 2026, all 18 Leopard 2 A8 tanks will then be available to the troops.
