Movement in the British Boxer project: Welding work for the prototype production and series ramp-up of the Mechanized Infantry Vehicle (MIV) has begun as planned at the Rheinmetall site in Kassel. This marks a crucial phase in the significant British wheeled armored vehicle project under the industrial responsibility of the consortium company Artec GmbH, a joint venture of Rheinmetall and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW). Initially, the development phase for the four British variants of the proven 8x8 combat vehicle started in late 2019. The first milestones were reached in autumn 2020. Due to the modular design of the Boxer, wherever possible, qualified solutions and designs have already been applied to the MIV program. Therefore, production of the first parts can now commence.
On behalf of Artec, Rheinmetall will develop and manufacture the first prototypes at the Kassel site. Components manufactured in the UK will be installed, such as weapon stations, Generic Vehicle Architecture components, the local situational awareness system, or the vehicle emergency lighting system. Additionally, the first series vehicles will be produced in Kassel.
After the series launch in Germany, the majority of production services will be provided in the UK during the further production process from 2023 onwards. The main production sites will be the UK facility of Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL) and the KMW subsidiary WFEL. The majority of Boxer vehicles for the British Army will be produced in the United Kingdom. The Rheinmetall site in Kassel is actively transferring welding expertise to the British colleagues at RBSL.
Overall, the British Army is procuring over 500 Boxer vehicles in the variants of troop transporter, command vehicle, ambulance, and specialist carrier. The delivery of the armored 8x8 vehicles is expected to begin at the end of 2022. All information on the British procurement on SPARTANAT.
In 2019, the UK decided to return to the Boxer user family. In November 2019, the British Ministry of Defense, through the European armaments agency OCCAR, signed a contract with the consortium company Artec GmbH, the manufacturer of the 8x8 wheeled armored vehicle. The Artec GmbH is a consortium of Rheinmetall and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW). It will produce the Boxer vehicles worth around 2.6 billion EUR (2.3 billion GBP) for the British armed forces, with 50% of the order volume each going to Rheinmetall and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann.

The Boxer is a highly protected 8x8 wheeled vehicle. Its modular architecture allows for a variety of variants like no other vehicle system. The variety of variants is subject to very high growth. Additional variants and upgrades are already planned. To date, around 1,200 vehicles in over 20 different variants are under contract in four NATO countries: Germany, the Netherlands, Lithuania, and the United Kingdom. Even NATO ally Australia has ordered a total of 211 Boxer vehicles in several versions.
Kassel - Rheinmetall's center of expertise for tactical wheeled vehicles
The Kassel site is Rheinmetall's center of expertise for tactical wheeled vehicles. This applies to development, prototyping, series production, as well as logistical support throughout the entire lifecycle.
Capable armored wheeled vehicles like the transport vehicle Fuchs or the Boxer produced in industrial cooperation continue to be the backbone of modern armed forces, contributing to their security and alliance credibility. The Rheinmetall site in Kassel successfully continues this long tradition. To this day, highly modern tactical wheeled vehicles are developed and produced in the industrial park Kassel-Mittelfeld - for the German Bundeswehr as well as for the armed forces of friendly nations and partners such as the Netherlands, Lithuania, Australia, or the United Kingdom.
