Books & more: Tragedy at Roberts Ridge

10/24/2013By Redaktion

Falling from a helicopter is already not a good idea, landing in a nest with Al-Qaeda fighters is even worse. This is what happened on March 4, 2002 during Operation Anaconda in Afghanistan. The incident ended with the death of Navy SEAL Neal Roberts. He was not secured when the Chinook, which was supposed to land the troops who were to occupy the Takur Ghar summit, made its approach. The first helo crashes for an emergency landing and in response to his distress call, a Quick Reaction Force (QRF) is set in motion to fly to the mountain. Three of them are killed and the rest later capture the summit. In this edition of "Raid" from Osprey Publishing, the events surrounding the summit are meticulously documented and all relevant images are collected. Along with the accounts of Operation Anaconda, of which the summit occupation was a part, this makes for an exciting read about a desperate mountain battle in extreme conditions.

"Takur Ghar – The SEALs and Rangers on Roberts Ridge, Afghanistan 2002 (Raid)" by Gregory Fremont-Barnes, Osprey Publishing, 2012, 96 pages. The book is available in bookstores or on Amazon for Euro 13.70. The ebook edition for Kindle "Takur Ghar – The SEALs and Rangers on Roberts Ridge, Afghanistan 2002 (Raid 39)" is already available for Euro 5.05.
