Until the last bullet

The image of a bullet mounted above a Kalashnikov with the Peshmerga near Kirkuk initially appears humorous, but reveals the intense battles against ISIS. It symbolizes the "last bullet" a fighter would use rather than fall into enemy hands.

Sometimes there are things that you can't quite place. The image shows a bullet mounted above the barrel of a Kalashnikov, taken during our visit with the Peshmerga near Kirkuk. At first glance, the viewer may think it's a humorous installation, like a "hood ornament." But then you learn that it's something completely different: the image actually shows how intense the battles are for the Peshmerga against the Islamic State. Because what is prominently displayed on the weapon is the proverbial "last bullet," with which the fighter would shoot themselves before falling into the hands of the jihadists.
