Bayern's Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann presented a unique innovation in police training in Nuremberg today: In the future, the Bavarian Police will be able to practice handling firearms with a state-of-the-art new laser training system. "This will allow our police officers to train even better and more realistically in solving deployment situations up to life-threatening situations such as rampage or terrorist attacks," emphasized Herrmann. Therefore, part of the shooting training with live firearms or colored marking ammunition can be omitted. The new laser training system from the Austrian company SIMGUN costs around €630,000. It currently includes 137 laser modules for training long guns and 156 special body units for visual and tactile hit detection.
As Herrmann explained, the training weapons equipped with the new laser module are completely safe for deployment forces and surroundings. There are no emissions of pollutants from gun smoke. With SIMGUN, training can be conducted at any location outside shooting ranges, such as schools and shopping centers. "In addition, our police officers can practice in their regular deployment clothing," the Minister of the Interior explained. "Special protective clothing with a helmet as required when using colored marking ammunition is not necessary." Herrmann sees this as a significant advantage: "Eye contact, facial expression, and communication are not restricted with our new laser training system. This is important because deployments should be solved primarily through communication and de-escalation."
