SAPI, that somehow reminds of sapiens - Latin for wise, clever, reasonable - has nothing to do with it, although it is probably smart to use these plates. The SAPIs are ballistic protection plates, so-called hard ballistics.
Since they were developed in the USA and Americans love abbreviations, SAPI is also one and stands for Small Arms Protective Insert. In German, roughly translated as small arms protective insert.
The plates are made of high-strength ceramic or polyethylene, which absorb the kinetic energy of a projectile and thus stop it. However, this only works through strong deformation of the plate. So a few ribs will break, but much better than being pierced.
