Rheinmetall is delivering automated reconnaissance systems to Ukraine on behalf of the German federal government. These systems are designed to monitor terrain sections with as little personnel as possible. Rheinmetall is cooperating with the Estonian company DefSecIntel for this project. The SurveilSPIRE reconnaissance systems include mobile surveillance towers with day and night vision camera equipment, autopiloted mini drones, and a command system. Transport vehicles are also included in the delivery scope. The contract value is in the double-digit million Euro range. Deliveries have already begun.
The mobile surveillance towers SurveilSPIRE from the Estonian manufacturer DefSecIntel are mounted on trailers and can be quickly transported to their deployment location. The setup requires only three personnel, and the operation is automated. The system has radio connections (4G and Starlink) for video transmission to a mobile headquarters. Solar cells enable sustainable operation without power cables or dependence on fuel. The system uses autopilot-controlled reconnaissance drones that can conduct patrol or mission flights. This allows identified threats to be verified and the operator to initiate countermeasures if necessary.
Rheinmetall is already involved in supporting Ukraine through several activities. The Rheinmetall subsidiary Zeppelin Mobile Systeme GmbH, with the support of the federal government, will deliver a turnkey field hospital in 2023. Additionally, Ukraine will receive 26 brand-new highly mobile swap body vehicles based on the HX platform and other armaments to defend against the Russian attack.
