The Spanish government has commissioned Rheinmetall, the world's largest manufacturer of artillery ammunition, to deliver a total of 94,200 155mm caliber shells. The framework contract for this has a volume of around 208 million Euros. The artillery shells are scheduled to be delivered to the Spanish Army between the end of 2024 and the end of 2025, with an option to extend for two years.
The ammunition now ordered is already being used by the Spanish customer; it is the second framework contract. This new commission highlights Rheinmetall's reliability as a partner of the Spanish Army in supplying key products.
The high-explosive shells (HE) of type ER02A1 have a maximum range of 30 km in the Boat-Tail variant (BT) and almost 40 km in the Base-Bleed variant (BB). The latter has a special device on the base of the shell. This device heats the air generated by the shell itself in its trajectory, reducing resistance and increasing the maximum range.
The recent commissions in the area of 155mm artillery ammunition underscore Rheinmetall's leading technological position in European ammunition development and manufacturing. Framework agreements with various NATO member states ensure the supply of artillery ammunition.
It was only on February 12, 2024, in the presence of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, that the symbolic groundbreaking was laid for a new plant in Lower Saxony's Unterlüß, which will mainly produce artillery ammunition alongside explosives and components for rocket artillery. On February 18, 2024, Rheinmetall and a Ukrainian partner company signed a Memorandum of Understanding, which will enable the production of artillery ammunition in Ukraine in the future.
